QUESTIONS ON PRODUCTS:
Question:
What is the main purpose of a life jacket?
Answer:
The main protective factor is that the life jacket will inflate automatically on emersion in water and bring you into a position where your face and head are above the water even in an unconscious state. It will support your head and upper body and minimise the risk of drowning.

Question:
What do I need to pay attention to when choose a model?
Answer:
Check the manufacturer's label to ensure that the life jacket is a proper fit for your size and weight.
Life jackets designed for adults will not work for children! If it's too big, the life jacket will ride up around your face.If it's too small, it will not be able to keep your body afloat.

Question:
What does Newton buoyancy relate to?
Answer:
Newton buoyancy basically relates to the amount of upward force or uplift provided by a lifejacket (or flotation suit / buoyancy aid) in the water.1 Newton = approximately 1 tenth of a kilo (100 grams). So a 50 Newton buoyancy aid will give 5 kilos of additional uplift in the water; a 100 Newton lifejacket will give 10 kilos of additional uplift; a 250 Newton lifejacket will give 25 kilos of additional uplift.

Question:
What is the difference between a 55N, 50N and 70N Buoyancy Aid?
Answer:
Buoyancy Aids are for using when help is near. All buoyancy aids are approved to the 50N standard but some are designed to have a greater amount of actual buoyancy for particular uses.
70N is for white water rafting and sports with fast running water. 70N is the minimum legal Newton in France.

Question:
Is my weight a determine factor in the selection of my lifejacket? If I am heavy in weight do I need to buy a 150 N instead of a 100 N?
Answer:
Not necessarily. Generally speaking larger than average people have more inherent buoyancy in their own bodies and greater lung capacity than smaller people so the additional buoyancy required to support you in the water and self-right you is sometimes less than with a smaller person.

Question:
How long is a lifejacket guaranteed for?
Answer:
This depends on the nature and frequency of use (if being used in a leisure environment on an occasional basis and providing it is well looked after and serviced regularly then it may well last for tens of years. If being used in a heavy duty commercial environment on a regular basis then it may only last 1 – 2 years.

Question:
Should a crutch strap be worn at all times?
Answer:
It is strongly advised that it should be. Otherwise you fall into the water, the tendency will be for the lifejacket to come up over your head with the force of inflation and the impact of the water. Then your lifejacket will not be giving you the correct protection and / or supporting your body.

Question:
What is the difference in weight between a 100 Newton and a 150 Newton lifejacket in its undeployed state?
Answer:
Less than 30 grams, which is very little. The common perception is that a 150 Newton lifejacket is a lot heavier and more cumbersome than a 100 Newton, but this is not the case.

Question:
When should my child wear a lifejacket?
Answer:
Children have often drowned when they were playing near the water and were not intending to go swimming. Children can fall into the water quickly and silently without adults being aware. A lifejacket can help keep your child safe until someone can rescue him.Make sure the lifejacket fits your child's weight. Buckle it up every time, and use all of the safety straps on the lifejacket. Your child could slip out of a lifejacket that is too big or not buckled up properly.
• If your child is under age 5, put him in a lifejacket when he is playing near or in the water - like at the swimming pool or at the beach. You still need to stay right beside your child.
• If your child is older than age 5 and cannot swim well, put her in a lifejacket when she is in the water. You still need to stay close to your child.
• If you are visiting somewhere where you will be near water, bring a lifejacket that fits your child. The place you are visiting may not have a lifejacket that fits your child properly.
• On a boat, make sure you and your child always wear a lifejacket that fits properly.

Question:
How do I know which lifejacket is right for my child?
Answer:
• Make sure the lifejacket is the right size for your child's weight. Lifejackets for children have weight limits. Adult sizes are based chest measurement and body weight.
• Make sure the lifejacket is comfortable and light, so your child will wear it. The fit should be snug. It should not ride up over your child's ears.
• For young children, the lifejacket should also have these special features:
o A large collar (for head support)
o A strap that buckles between the legs - so the lifejacket will not slip over your child's head
o A waist strap that you can adjust - so you can make the lifejacket fit snugly
o Ties at the neck and/or a sturdy plastic zipper
o Bright colour and reflective tape to help you see your child in the water
• At least once a year, check to see if the lifejacket still fits your child

Question:
How many life jackets do I need on board?
Answer:
You must have one lifejacket for every member on board which includes children.

Question:
What is the difference between 50N,100N,150N and 275N?
Answer:
50 Newtons – Intended for use by those who are competent swimmers. 100 Newton – Intended for those who may need to wait for rescue but will do so in a safe position in sheltered waters. 150 Newtons – General off shore and rough weather use.
